Following his fathers death in April 1899 John Robert Richardson now head of the family business applied for a Passport on 14 August 1899 .
Intended Destination details are lost.
However it is known he went to Africa at some time previous? to his marriage in 1901 possibly to secure Timber contracts for the family business. Whilst in Africa he contracted Maleria whiich plaqued him the rest of his life.

It is not known how John robert Richardson came to meet his bride Louisa ellen Roberts, however he was present at her father's funeral in September 1900, and given he was in the 2nd carriage along with Edward Roberts (brother)and John Vine(married aunt Mary ann Roberts), its clear John was by then a close family friend.

The death took place yesterday, of pneumonia, at Bridlington, of Mr Robert Richardson, of the firm of Messrs Richardson and Co., timber merchants, Queen's Dock, Hull!. He was the son the late Mr Joseph Richardson, Bond-street, Hull. Deceased had not been in robust health but. his death was unexpected. He has left a widow and three children.
