On 14 August 1899 John Robert Richardson now head of the family business applied for a Passport. Intended Destination details are lost.

However it is known he went to Africa at some time previous to his marriage in 1901 possibly to secure Timber contracts for the family business. Whilst in Africa he contracted Maleria whiich plaqued him the rest of his life.
