DEATH OF MR JOHN FISHER SKIPPER. A TRAGIC END. Very general regret was expressed in Te Puke on Friday last when it became known that Mr John Fisher Skipper, a well known settler, of Matata, had met his death under tragic circumstances, Mr Skipper and his family lived on their farm at Otamarakau, situated about twenty miles from To Puke, On Friday morning before breakfast, he took his gun to go out shooting, which was not an unusual occurrence. Shortly after a shot was heard, but no alarm was felt, even when he did not return to breakfast, for he would often call in at a neighbour's for a cup of tea instead of returning home. As time wore on, however, Mrs Skipper became anxious, and set out in the direction of the sound of the. shot. After proceeding some distance she was horrified to observe the body of her husband lying near a fence, with his head badly shattered. Much agitated, she at once rushed away, and fortunately met Mr Queenie, of Otamarakau, who assisted to remove the body. The authorities were then notified, and an inquest was subsequently held by Mr Lally, Coroner-of Te Puke. Evidence was given by Mr Burton, who saw deceased leave the house, Mr Quiarrie, Dr MacFarlano, who testified to the nature of the injuries, and Mrs Skipper. The Latter deposed that her husband had been somewhat depressed lately, but there was nothing whatever to indicate that he intended taking his life. He had not been drinking, the only stimulant he took being a brandy with an egg beaten up in it, which she gave him at regular intervals. The Coroner found that, deceased met his death by a gunshot wound, but that there, was no evidence to show how the fatality occurred. The interment took place at the Te Puke cemetery on Sunday.
