Birth and Death details of first children show John and Margaret living at Millers Flat some 10 miles south of Roxburgh and Moa Flat on the other side of the river Today this is a small farming area population only about 100 but at that time another Gold mining community Did John follow the Otago Gold rush to become a miner he is a baker at the time of his marriage in 1871 certainly at the time of Alfred's birth in 1877 he was a miner but by 1878 he had returned to his trade as a Baker
