Jevaise/Jarvis Roberts of Westgate buried 18th May 1846 St. Johns Wakefield aged 36, leaving his widow Jane Roberts pennyless.
Javis was to have inherited money from his father, however he died 2 months before his father George Roberts d.24th july 1846. It appears the will made no alternative provision in his Will for wife and children, so the money all passed to Georges widow Martha Roberts, who for a while supported her daughter in law Jane and grand children.

The following newspaper report got the names muddled up but a later item makes it clear that it is Martha Roberts who is being forced to continue support for her grand children.

WAKEFIELD A Hard Case,
On Monday last Mrs. Mary Roberts, a lady of handsome fortune residing in Wakefield, was summond before the Magistrates by the oberseers of the poor, for refusing to maintain two grandchildren who had become chargable to the parish.

It appeared from the statement of the assistant overseer, Mr. Heaelton that the two children were the son and daughter of the late Mr. George Roberts, who happening to die before a relative who had left a handsome legacy in his will to Mr. George*(Javis) Roberts, the property on the death of the relative became a lapsed legacy, and the widow and children of Mr. Roberts were left pennyless by his decease.
The Property now enjoyed by Mrs Martha Roberts was part of the property left by the relative above mentioned. This lady for some time allowed the widow and children of her son the magnificent sum of 10s per week!
A few weeks ago on the death of one of the children, Mrs. Roberts refused to allow the family of her son any further relief and they became chargable to the parish.
Mr. Whitham, solicitor, who appeared for mrs Roberts, stated to the bench that his client was willing to support, cloth and educate her grandchildren, on condition they left their mother. The assistant overseer, in reply, said that it would be exceedingly unfeeling to seperate the mother from her children.
The assistant presssed for an order of 10s per week upon Mrs Roberts, for the support of her grandchildren.
The Magistrates declared the case of the unfortunate children to be a very hard one, that Mrs. Roberts must allow them 10s a week, they would however, give that lady a week for consideration, and if she could not agree to the demands of the overseers, that they would grant an order next week. The case was consequently ajourned for a week.
