It is thought that John Clarke senior was born about 1798 in Kent, and came to NZ as a "Fencible",
arriving in Auckland NZ on the Minerva 8 October 1847, having departed from Gravesend 1st July 1847.

it is not known where he married Catherine Halliday but he would be about 60 when his son John was born circa 1856.

John Clarke would normally have recieved a land Grant on leaving the Fencibles No such grant having been recieved is is probable his employment was Terminated, as were many others for infractions of the rules.
