NO HOME FOR DOREEN, FAMILY IN CRISIS:
Wes Burns with mum Doreen, 92, and sister Rosemary are desperately trying to find a place for Doreen in a home in Auckland because of the closure of the Seaside Sanctuary.Care and Craft volunteer DOREEN Burns faces an uncertain future after the closure of the Seaside Sanctuary rest home in Surfdale.

The 92-year-old may have to farewell the island that's been her home for 60 years if a solution isn't found. She moved to Waiheke with her husband Bob in 1951 and doesn't want to go. "My friends and family are here and everything I love."

The Seaside Sanctuary Trust has cited compliance requirements, increased operating costs, decreasing income, the cost of refurbishing the complex and the difficulty of recruiting staff as reasons for its closure. Doreen's daughter Rosemary Burns says the situation is "just terrible". "I wish I could look after mum at home but she needs specialist nurse help, bordering on hospital care, which I can't provide."

She is concerned about how often family will be able to visit Doreen if she goes off-island, and the cost in both time and money."I see her every day and can pop down in the evenings if she is having a down day."
Her brother Wes says they are "hoping for a miracle"."Our sister Pamela is looking for a place in a home in Auckland but most are full or have long waiting lists."
Doreen campaigned for housing for the elderly and was an advocate for the council-owned pensioner village in Ostend which was built in 1992, saying that the island's elderly "should not be forced to move away from their community".
Even now she is quick to advocate for others. "It's not just me, so many are affected and not just the residents, but their families as well," she says.
Nineteen rest home residents need to be relocated in the next five weeks - several have left already. Doreen was a founding member of the Care and Craft group which she still attends on Thursdays with other Seaside Sanctuary residents. The voluntary group brings elderly and disadvantaged people together for activities and morning tea.
Volunteer Mercedes Bainbridge says: "We are worried many Seaside Sanctuary residents have no close relatives or alternative care on offer. People at this stage of their life don't cope well with change. Of the 300 elderly moved from homes in Christchurch after the earthquakes, 100 have already died."
She says one resident who has been at the rest home for 20 years, has no close relatives in New Zealand and has advanced dementia. "She is terrified and doesn't really understand what's happening. She's been waiting for the authorities to come and get her."
Seaside Sanctuary Trust spokesperson Pat Orchard says:
"As part of the closing down process we are in consultation with the health board and talking to all the residents and their families to find the best possible outcome for each resident. It is expected that this will be achieved by the first week in November."

Mourners are getting ready to farewell a Waiheke Island matriarch.
Photo BIG HEART: Doreen Burns devoted a huge part of her life to voluntary work on Waiheke Island.

Doreen Elizabeth Burns QSM died in her sleep at 2.30am on January 18 at Christ's Hospital in Selwyn Retirement Village, Pt Chevalier. She was 93.

Doreen was born in Stratford, Taranaki, in 1919 and moved to Devonport as a child. She worked in Epsom and Hamilton where she met Selwyn Charles Houghton. The couple married in 1942 and had a child, Wesley, but tragedy struck when Sel was killed on active service in 1944. "By the time she was 25, she was a wife, a mother and a widow," daughter Rosemary says. "And in those days there was no DPB."
Sel's good pal Bob Burns paid his friend's widow and son a visit and grew close to both of them. He and Doreen married in 1946 and because Bob needed some peace after the war, the couple would visit Waiheke every Friday for the weekend, and they moved there permanently in 1951,"

Rosemary says:- "Mum's family thought she was half-barmy coming to an island in the middle of nowhere. She was only going to stay for five years then go back to Devonport." But the Burns family stayed.

The couple ran a hardware store in Oneroa and Doreen later managed a clothing business. The pair also published a free newspaper called The Good Oil, which started in 1971. Doreen was a founding member of the Waiheke Care and Craft group, established in 1985, and didn't hand over the reins of co-ordinator until 2003. She was a member and volunteer of countless groups, societies and good causes and will be remembered for helping get pensioner housing established on the island at Belgium St in Ostend in 1992.

Doreen was awarded a Queen's Service Medal for Community Service in 1995. And in 2004, she was one of six finalists Aucklander of the Year award at which time she was dubbed the Queen of Waiheke for her 55 years of voluntary work on the island.

Doreen moved to Seaside Sanctuary in May 2009 for two-and-a-half years and spent her last 14 months at Selwyn Retirement Village in Pt Chevalier.

She is survived by her children Wesley, Pamela, Jim and Rosemary. The funeral for family and friends took place at the Selwyn Village chapel, Target St, Pt Chevalier.
