| Police Court, Assaulting the Police. A young man named Frederick Ellis was charged with having unlawfully assaulted Constable Peter Thomas McMahon, acting-detective, in the execution of his duty. Mr O'Meagher appeared for the Accused, and pleaded not guilty. Acting-detective McMahon, deposed that he arrested Ellis on January 31, for stealing a watch. Ellis then said that he wanted to have a private conversation with another person, and witness objecting, Ellis struck him on the mouth and knocked him down. The accused then ran away, and escaped from custody. He was not seen again until the 3rd inst, when he came to the police station and gave himself up. Sentence was deferred pending the hearing of another charge. |

My grandfather John Paul Bilski's parents were named Bielski and on his birth certificate his name was spelt Byelski and his birth date was 23 October 1876 and not November 1875 as was thought.
On his marriage certificate he has put that he was 36 years of age which meant that he was born in 1882, but I think that was because he was about 20 years older than my grandmother.
(He changed the spelling of his name to Bilski as did some but not all of his siblings.
I also found that the name of Yeo was miss-spelt as Geo on some heritage sites.
The Yeo family history has been traced back 22 generations and finally to the Plantagenets - King Edward I. This has all been documented by a distant relative in England who lives close to where my mother and grandmother's families were born and lived.
Whilst in England in July this year(2015) I went to Chudleigh and Ugbrooke House and saw the chapel there (St Cyprians) where my grandparents Bessie Yeo and John Paul Bilski were married.
Lord Clifford, whose estate it is, managed to get me a copy of the entry of their marriage from the Parish registers for me.
I also have a copy of my grandmother's birth certificate and grandparent's full marriage certificate.
At the time of their marriage John Paul Bilski was in residence at Heathfield Farm, Kingsteignton(Devon UK), and Bessie Yeo was at Gappah,( 5 miles north)
The marriage witnesses were Frank Yeo, Bessie's brother and Doris Friend.
John Paul was in the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces stationed at Devonport,(Plymouth Devon,uk) England, where I presume he met my grandmother Bessie.
He fought most of the war in France and was hospitalised there according to his war records which I got online at the New Zealand Archives.
According to Bessie Yeo's birth certificate she was born on 12 February 1896 at Teifer Terrace, Christow, in the sub-district of St Thomas, County of Devon, England.
Her parents were Henry Yeo and Alice Maud Mary Yeo, formerly Lee. It appears that she was born at home.
My grandfather John Paul Bilski was born on the West Coast of the South Island in New Zealand in October 1876. His Polish parents immigrated from Prussia in January 1876 on the ship Shakespeare with John Paul's 3 siblings, who were all named on the ship's manifest.
John Paul was named Johann, which is the Polish word for John and I am not sure where the Paul came from.
He died on a trolley bus coming from the city in New Plymouth to his home on 05 February 1960. Bessie died on 18 October 1975.
My mother Mary Bilski Nansett was born at Gappah, Kingsteington, Newton Abbot, County of Devon, England on 07 October 1919 and died on 21 July 2011 in her 92nd year.
Her family immigrated to New Zealand in 1920. Unfortunately my father Victor Nansett died on 06 October 1970 aged 56.

| WEDDING BELLS NANSETT BILSKI / The marriage took place on November 9th, 1940, at St* Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, New Plymouth, of Mary Frances May, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Bilski, New .Plymouth, and Victor Michael, second son of Mr. and Mrs. I. E. Nansett, Palmerston North. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Father P. J.' Minogue, who also celebrated the Nuptial Mass. The bride, who entered the church with her father, wore a graceful trained gown of magnolia satin, with long sleeves rucked from elbow to shoulder, and finished with a raw of tiny buttons from elbow to cuff, which came to a point over the hand. Her veil, which was embroidered with satin roses, was worn with a coronet of-orange bios- • sorn, and she carried a sheaf of cream roses. The bridesmaids, Misses Veronica Bilski (chief), and Eileen Sheehy, were dressed alike, in fuchsia taffeta s frocks. Silver Juliet caps studded with tiny fuchsia coloured flowers wereworn, aild they carried bouquets of pink roses. Mr. Norbort Nausett, brother of the bridegroom, was best man, and Mr. John Bilski, brother of the bride, was groomsman. The church wa a decorated by sisters of the New'Plymouth Convent. Miss Joan Pope played the Wedding March and music for the Nuptial Mass, which was sung by the Children of Mary, of which Soladity the bride was a member. On leaving the Church the bride was presented with a silver horseshoe by a friend, Miss Jean McNiven. A guard of honour was fonued by the Children of Mary, who held blue and white streamers. The reception was held at the Mon Desir tea rooms, where the guests were received by Mrs. Bilski, wore a navy blue georgette a floral frock, with navy hat and accessories. She was assisted by Mrs. Nausett, who wore a fur coat over a navy blue frock, with navy hat and accessories. When Mr. and Mrs. V. M. Nansett left on a tour of the north the bride was wearing a black pin-stripe costume with black hat and accessories. She also wore a fur stole, the gift of the bridegroom. Mr. and Mrs., Nausett's future home will be at Lower Hutt. |
