Daniel appointed Deputy Inspector-General of Hospitals in 1850
Daniel Scott had spent time in the Caribbean on St Kitt’s, and also at Gibraltar, and had achieved the commission of Inspector General of Hospitals in Gibraltar by 1854.
In 1855 he arrived to Malta as Principal Medical Officer of the Malta Garrison. Records indicate that he “attributed the 1850 outbreak of cholera in the Valletta (Malta) hospital to the effluvia emanating from the porous rock on which the hospital was built which had, over time, become saturated with offensive leakage from the sewers. Scott recommended the building of a new hospital.” As a result, a nearby palace was purchased, and along with an adjoining hostel was converted into a military hospital.
Daniel Scott left Malta in 1857, retired in 1859 and eventually returned to Scotland, living in Edinburgh.
