SCOTT FAMILY STRATHBRAAN TO VICTORIA by Michael Rolf

Origins - Strathbraan, Perthshire

The setting for this part of the story is Strathbraan, i.e. the valley of the River Braan, in Perthshire, Scotland. (The prefix “Strath” meaning a broad, flat river valley). The “Secret Strath”, as it is marketed these days, is close to the geographical centre of Scotland. It lies a few miles west of Dunkeld, a picturesque small town on the River Tay; and just to the south of Aberfeldy, in Perthshire.

Established more than two centuries past as one of Scotland's first tourist routes, the charms, secrets, lively characters and stunning landscapes have been little known, slumbering in the half light of history. The area brims with characters, from centuries past to the present day residents. Their combined vitality and creative talents keep this area very much alive. Swashbuckling legends such as Rob Roy and Bonnie Prince Charlie passed through here. The road-building colossus General George Wade constructed his many miles of Military routes here. Poet William Wordsworth penned an ode to 'The Lonely Inn' at Amulree.

Earliest origins of the Scott family originate at Borlick Farm west of Little Dunkeld

Borlick is on the Old Military Road (nowadays the A822) in Strathbraan between Dunkeld and Amulree.
This is not to be confused with another farm of the same name outside the nearby village of Aberfeldy.
