James was born the 4th child of Charles and Isabella Campbell
at Blue Spur, Tuapeka District, Central Otago.

James travelled with his mother Isabella and 4 siblings, aged 16, from Blue Spur to Takaka in December 1908, where his father Charles had taken up employment as a mine manager in 1901.

James worked as a carpenter in the Takaka district
He died at the Pupu Valley, Takaka,
25 July 1915 at the age of 23yrs
of Phthsis Syncope B, NZBDM1915/6359.

He was buried in an unmarked grave at
Rototai Cemetary beside the remains of his sister ,
Margaret Isabella d.1914, who also died of tuberculosis.
